Wynn Prize 2009
What can I say about this, I like the winning sculpture. The exhibition has an element of fun to it in the hanging of works that are far from the best that have ever been seen as exhibited works for this prize.
Perhaps the judges need to go bush so they can get an idea of what a landscape might represent. Perhaps the judges are just displaying the general fear of anything outside their day today and trying to have what they are not familiar with displayed as something from the urban world. There had to be better works submitted than those shown, or should we just assume that the average Australian landscape artist is so devoid of imagination that they think visual cardboard is good.
There is one work that stood apart this was Joshua Yeldham's Motherland. If everything had been at this standard of imagination and skill there could have been little cause for complaint. Sadly the remainder were not of a similar standard at all.
I walked away feeling disappointed and quite unhappy about paying to see such an impoverished lot of material.
