Reviews...Port Stephens Art Prize 2009
When a local art prize, that is not supported by a Regional Gallery has over 400 entries it is a wonderful statement of the health of the art community. While the standard of work generally may not be as high as that in some large prize money competitions, the entries showed a diversity of work and skill levels that probably informs the collector more effectively about what is out there than more prestigious events.
The prize went to an excellent seascape, while the commended works were of a good standard. Our staff as usual were tempted and purchased one of the commended works.
Works on paper were very well represented this year. They filled a large area of the gallery and also presented some of the most impressive work in the exhibition.
The local Art Society is to be commended for such a wonderful effort.
