Reviews...Manning Art Prize 2009
This 9th Manning Art Prize attracted a wonderful selection of work by artists from across Australia. Over 300 hundred entries were submitted and the 100 finalist works were selected from these.
The prize was judged by Mr Reg Richardson AM, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales Foundation. The Judges delight in the quality of the entries was visible and his description of the standard as being higher than that of the Mosman Art Prize was appreciated by the artists.
The sculpture works are worth the trip to Taree and a number of the 2 dimensional works are skillful, fun and intriguing. Without exception the works are rated highly within their genres, by the reviewer.
The winning work was a painting based on chickens, unfortunately it does not appear in the catalogue. The Regional Gallery receives the work as a gift from the Friends of the Gallery, fortunately the acquisition does not appear to be a purchase for the gallery collection as is the case with some other large prizes.
This exhibition is highly recommended for anyone interested in a mix of contemporary and avant guard art in traditional media. The exhibition is open from September 19 to October 18 2009.
