Phillipe Lunard, Hotel de Ville, St. Menehould, Argonne, France

This exhibition was a small but impressive presentation by a local artist of merit. Staged in the upstairs hall of the Hotel de Ville the exhibition ran for one week. With thirty works generally of small size it was possible to appreciate the works at close quarters, in comfort.

Design wise the exhibition was a very standard affair with the works mounted on four long presentation dividers. The side lighting from the large windows of the Hotel de Ville was quite adequate to give good lighting.

The works themselves were smallish, well finished and developed paintings. They escaped from the abstracted simplicity of Impressionism but still relying on the presentation of observed light to achieve their individual aim. The works sold well with something of a race to purchase the best on the first day. One particular purchaser was disappointed by not striking first on at least three paintings.

These are annual exhibitions, which means Mr Lunard's output is consistently fewer than 30 works per year. The quality of work is excellent and fully exploits the light of southern Champagne to produce works that border on beautiful, while retaining much of the day to day feel of his region.

I recommend going to Mr Lunard's next exhibition and collecting one or two of his excellent works at amazingly low cost.
