Artist's Profile
Neil Miley has had works selected for the St George Art Prize 2010, Mortimore Art Prize 2010 and the Norville Art Prize 2010. These Prizes are amongst the more prestigiuos of Australian art prizes. Neil has been selected for the Mortimore two years running. This adds to the Stanthorpe Art Prize 2010 that Neil was selected for earlier in the year.
Neil and Marianne Beuzeville are exhibiting at the Port Stephens Community Art Centre.
In 2010 Neil travelled in Eastern France for five weeks visiting the Argonne, and Lorriane. He found in the local artists both past and present a new impetus which has resulted in over twenty paintings of a small and intimate size being produced. His number of larger works has declined this year, with only three considerable works being produced.
After a two month journey through Europe in 2009 Neil commenced a series of paintings that reflect his response to the vast collection of Museums that he visited. The first of these works "Museums" has been selected for exhibition at the Manning Art Prize 2009, Stanthorpe Art Festival 2010 and ArtScene 2010. The second work "Villages" along with the third "People" has been exhibited through Art Scene. He continues to work on this series while undertaking a new series of drawings in sanguine, black and white charcoal with occassional pastel colour emphasis.
Neil Miley's work follows his deep interest in personalities and the way that they are expressed in societies. This interest is the central concept in his current series called the Every Day of which one painting is in our current stock, while five more are to be completed in 2009. Previous series such as the Myths (7 works of which two are completed) and Coastal (25 works) have likewise had this as a central theme though somewhat more difficult to identify. This new series is more direct in representation, focussing on moments between indecision and action.Neil's new series for 2009 is a set of small format paintings that draw their inspiration from the recent JW Waterhouse exhibition in Groningen. There are 6 completed works in the series, which may eventually expand to up to 12 paintings. This series will not be available through the Gallery until after October 2009 when they will be on public exhibition at the Tighes Hill Gallery in Newcastle.
In 2008 he produced twenty eight paintings, which is consistent with his output over several years. His works vary in size from 15cm by 10cm to 185cm by 125cm, but he is happy to work at any scale.
Since his debut in the First New Symbolist Exhibition at the TAP Gallery in 2005 he has exhibited at a number of venues, participating in group and solo exhibitions from Queabeyan to Port Stephens.
